Latina Women Are At Greater Risk For Gestational Diabetes
Rooted in the coronavirus outbreak, job losses in the latest recession have been concentrated in sectors in which social distancing of workers is difficult or the option to telework is lacking. Just three sectors – leisure and hospitality, education and health services, and retail trade – accounted for 59% of the total loss in nonfarm jobs from February to May.
Reasons For Latina Migration
The majority of those workers are women, 4.2 million are Latinas, and over 38 percent of Latinos who would benefit are parents. Although a minimum wage hike wouldn’t fully solve the problem, it is a step in the right direction. NWLC reports that Latinas who work full-time, year-round jobs and also have a bachelor’s degree generally only earn about $52,037 per year. A White, non-Hispanic man with only an associate’s degree, on the other hand, generally makes $54,620. This comparison offers a bleak perspective of the position that Latina women are in – that despite having more education, some Latina women still earn lower wages and must work longer to make the same amount of money.
The sessions took place on consecutive Thursday evenings at the Miami–Dade County HIV/AIDS Office, with 7 to 8 participants per group. A single trained Latina health educator delivered the general health intervention in Spanish to the women who were randomized to the comparison group. The single-session, 2.5-hour interactive group interventions also took place on Thursday evenings, with an average of 7 to 8 women. Comparison participants viewed a video in Spanish that provided basic HIV information. As with the AMIGAS intervention, we field-tested the general health intervention with Latina women recruited in Miami.
(See Figure 1.) Latina women were 16 percentage points likelier than white women in the same income category — and Black women 12 percentage points likelier — to report loss of employment income in their household. With over 20 years of industry experience with leading staffing vendors, Vanessa has held several high-level senior management positions.
Furthermore, experts have suggested that the lower incidence of the disease in peers outside the U.S. means that Hispanic-American women with ties in Latin countries may be less likely to know someone who had the disease, which naturally makes these women less concerned that it could happen to them. Beyond that, though, the differences between Latinas in and outside the United States suggests that there could be lifestyle and environmental factors that contribute to the development of the disease in these women as well.
For example, nearly one-third of nursing assistants and home health aides are Black women, according to an analysis by the Center for American Progress. It also documents LIFT members’ experience with accessing key relief measures and the important role of LIFT’s cash payments in filling in gaps. It focuses on Black and Latina women, who have been among those hardest hit by the pandemic and represent the majority of LIFT members.
In 2018, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress at the age of 29. The Puerto Rican Bronx native has been a vocal advocate for a more equitable U.S. and has continued to lead efforts for tuition-free public colleges and universities, guaranteed living wage for all Americans and Medicare-for-all. In her short time as a US Representative, she has brought over https://www.jeffjacquetlaw.com/why-no-body-is-what-you-should-do-today-and-speaking-about-dominican-women/ $4.3 billion in federal funding to support healthcare, affordable housing, transportation, retirement security, and combating opioid addiction in her district. After earning a teaching certificate, Huerta was a lead community organizer with the Stockton Community Service Organization. Seven years later, they built the National Farm Workers Association where she led lobbying and negotiating efforts for laborers.
Specifically, Latin American women in the American mainstream media are exoticised and hypersexualized. From Naya Rivera’s role asSantana LopezonGleeto Shakira and Jennifer Lopez’s somewhat infamous music videos toshameless advertisements, it’s not hard to find examples of thesexualization of Latina womenin pop culture. But there’s a more insidious side to this kind of stereotyping — besides being inaccurate, these types of depictions have been used to blame high rates of teen pregnancies in the community on the “spicy Latina.” According to a Colorado State University study, Latinas are victims of a broken educational pipeline, meaning they are underrepresented in honors, advanced placement and gifted and talented programs. This disparity, the researchers argue, is not due to a lack of intellectual capabilities, but rather a deficiency in opportunities.
An additional methodological limitation was that our comparison intervention also focused on HIV, rather than serving as a true placebo to guard against Hawthorne effects. Thus, future HIV prevention trials would benefit from inclusion of a time-equivalent comparison condition that focuses on a topic other than HIV prevention but addresses a relevant and important health issue for Latina women. We relied on self-report data, had a relatively short follow-up, were unable to assess condom use by partner type, and lacked objective and quantifiable biological outcomes, such as incident sexually transmitted infections, to assess intervention efficacy. Future trials of HIV interventions conducted with ethnically diverse samples of Latina women would benefit by addressing these limitations. The efficacy of AMIGAS may also be partly attributable to inclusion of Latina women and integration of Latina cultural values in all facets of the study, from the conceptualization, adaptation, and implementation of the intervention to the recruitment and retention of participants and study evaluation.
- After they Bay of Pigs failure, many middle class Cuban families sought escape from the newly communist Cuba in the United States.
- Thus, many Cuban women found themselves in the United States as a result of their family.

- This led to Cubans use of flotillas in order to make it to the southern coast of Florida.
We also found evidence that the number of male and female preterm births over and above expected values peaked in February and July 2017. As noted above, these peaks would suggest critical periods near conception and during the second trimester, assuming the election marked the onset of stress. The inauguration and subsequent passage of immigration-related Executive Orders in January 2017, for example, may have stressed Latina women as much as or more than the election.
We computed percentage relative change for continuous variables as the difference between the adjusted means for each condition divided by the adjusted mean for the comparison condition. Two trained Latina health educators presented AMIGAS in Spanish during 4 interactive group sessions lasting 2.5 hours each.
Latinas with gestational diabetes may be at risk for conditions such as high blood pressure after pregnancy. Additionally, women with gestational diabetes will need to be tested for Type 2 diabetes 4 to 12 weeks after a baby is born. If you don’t test positive for Type 2 diabetes at that follow-up visit, make sure to get tested as part of your yearly physical.

The Hispanic paradox refers to the medical research indicating that Latino immigrants enter the United States with better health, on average, than the average American citizen, but lose this health benefit the longer they reside in the United States. It is important to note that this health paradox affects both male and female populations of Latinos. Likewise, immigrant Latina women are found to have a lower infant mortality rate than U.S. born women. This has been explained by the tendency for Hispanic women to continue breastfeeding for a longer amount of time. The 1970s marked the first decade in which a gender shift occurred in Mexican migration.
